Luxembourgish nationality - Application for approval of syllabuses for Luxembourgish language classes

Last update : 09.02.2024

General information

Under the provisions of the Law of 8 March 2017 on Luxembourgish nationality, training bodies may apply for approval of the syllabuses for their Luxembourgish language classes.

An adult who has been living legally in the Grand-Duchy for at least 20 years may apply for Luxembourgish nationality by option. The procedure requires the person to attend Luxembourgish language classes according to a syllabus that has been approved by the Minister with responsibility for education.

Conditions for approval

The conditions for approval being granted for a syllabus are as follows:

  • the course provider (association or company) must be legally established in the Grand Duchy;
  • the classes must be held in an institutional context;
  • the level of the course and any pre-requirements must be posted publicly;
  • the learning outcomes must be clearly stated;
  • the duration of the training in hours is laid down (at least 34 hours);
  • attendance is checked on the basis of a list of signatures;
  • a certificate of attendance is issued on the basis of the check on attendance.

The approval of syllabuses for Luxembourgish language classes under the provisions of the Law of 8 March 2017 on Luxembourgish nationality is strictly limited to the approved Luxembourgish language classes and may not be used by the training provider for any other purpose.

Syllabus approval must be renewed every five years. During this period, the provider undertakes to report any change in the information provided at the time of applying for approval (legal representative, registered office, training syllabus, etc.) to the Department of Adult Education (Service de la formation des adultes - SFA).

The course provider may include the mention "Course according to a syllabus approved in accordance with the provisions of the Law of 8 March 2017 on Luxembourgish nationality" on certificates and publications in relation to the approved courses.

Copies of the list of approved courses are sent to the Minister with responsibility for nationality.

In the event of failure to comply with the conditions for approval of a syllabus for one or more Luxembourgish language courses, approval may be withdrawn in respect of all the Luxembourgish language classes delivered by the training provider.
