ENAD - National School for Adults (École nationale pour adultes)

Last update : 11.08.2023

General information

Based on an innovative educational concept, the National School for Adults (École Nationale pour Adultes - ENAD) is an integral part of the public school system.

It is for everyone aged between 16 and 30 who

  • because they didn't do well at school or made bad career choices, dropped out of school or were unable to find an apprenticeship;
  • left school without obtaining any recognised qualification and want to improve their skills and obtain another diploma.

The ENAD teaches these learners in a specific way, giving priority to supervision and personal tutoring. It meets learners’ needs in terms of initiation, catching up, qualification, retraining and personal fulfilment.

The school is able to offer classical secondary education and general secondary education from the 5e class upwards. The ENAD also offers sandwich and on-the-job training courses for social education workers leading to the social education worker’s diploma and to the general secondary school leaving diploma as well as preparatory modules providing access to higher studies.

Personal and professional project

Registration with the ENAD is subject to certain conditions. Learners must attend an individual interview,

  • in order to state their reasons for applying to the ENAD,
  • sign a training contract stipulating that the learner is motivated to participate in classes actively and assiduously and will comply with the school’s discipline and timetable, and
  • define a personal and professional project.

ENAD's reports and attestations are attached to the national certification scheme operated by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth. The tests of the final examinations are organised in the same way as those for pupils in initial training in secondary schools.

Any learner who, an account of absence, misses more than 10% of all the compulsory classes for the school year will not be allowed to complete that year of the training.

Access to Higher Education Diploma (Diplôme d’accès aux études supérieures - DAES)

The DAES diploma enables people who have not been able to obtain a diploma certifying successful completion of secondary studies for any reason to obtain an equivalent diploma. Like the diploma awarded on successful completion of secondary studies, the DAES is a national diploma, allowing its holder to enrol at a higher education institution in the Grand Duchy or abroad; it also opens up the path to professional insertion or promotion; lastly, it allows the holder to sit the examinations for entering the civil service.

The DAES is also for holders of the DAP, the master craftsmanship qualification, or the technician's diploma to enable them to attend adult education classes providing direct access to higher and university studies (allgemeine Hochschulreife).

The DAES is offered in two forms:

  • DAES in daytime classes: 5 days a week, 30 hours of classes
  • DAES as a sandwich course: classes 3 evenings a week, the rest as online self-study

The DAES is available in two versions: one where the language of instruction is predominantly French, while the International DAES is taught in English.
