VAE for the Higher Technician Certificate

Last update : 18.05.2026

General information

The validation of non-formal and informal learning (VAE) allows experience to be recognised with a view to gaining access to studies leading to a Higher Technician Certificate (BTS), or being partially exempted from certain parts of a programme of studies.

VAE is for anyone, regardless of age, level of education or professional status.

The essential condition is to have carried out at least 3 years full-time equivalent, paid, unpaid or voluntary professional activity, whether continuous or not, that is directly related to the requested certification and in the field concerned.

VAE can be carried out in order to demonstrate some of the knowledge and skills required to obtain a BTS qualification. It allows the candidate to be partially exempted from certain courses or modules of the study programme concerned. However, candidates must take courses corresponding to at least 30 ECTS credits of the relevant study programme.

Identifying the diploma that corresponds to the applicant's experience

To identify the diploma that corresponds to their experience, applicants can consult the list and obtain information from the corresponding secondary schools. Not all BTS qualifications are accessible via VAE as yet, given that at least one cohort of students must have completed a full cycle of training before the corresponding procedure can be implemented.

Procedure

The request for validation of non-formal and informal learning is sent to the relevant secondary school. It is accompanied by a portfolio which must set out the knowledge, skills and abilities that the applicant has gained through experience and which form part of the training programme of the BTS sought. The file must contain evidence. It is not simply a question of describing the skills acquired; they must also be verifiable.

On the proposal of the director of the secondary school, the Minister appoints a VAE committee for each training programme leading to the BTS.

This committee examines the validation request and the portfolio. It may organise an interview with the candidate, have the latter take an exam or place the candidate into a professional situation, whether real-life or simulated.

The committee decides on the validation of non-formal and informal learning and on the extent of such validation. Exemptions from courses or modules granted to the candidate by the VAE committee are validated by the examination board.
