Incense culture (Xiangdao) stands alongside tea ceremony and flower arrangement as one of the three classical Eastern arts of refinement, which treats fragrance as a tool for relaxation or mood enhancement, Eastern incense ceremony is a contemplative discipline — training perception, cultivating stillness, and refining the most overlooked of our senses: smell.
This course introduces participants to the history, materials, rituals, and meditative practice of Eastern incense appreciation — from learning to identify noble aromatic woods by scent alone, to preparing and blending their own incense, to hosting a formal incense gathering. The practice is quiet, intimate, and deeply grounding.
