Starting September 2023, the University of Luxembourg will offer a new innovative Master in High Performance Computing. This Master will train the next generation of HPC experts in Luxembourg and Europe. Students will gain cutting-edge knowledge in high performance computing, high performance data analytics and artificial intelligence. Innovative Master programme The Master in High Performance Computing (HPC) is implemented within the framework of the HPC European Consortium Leading Education Activities (EUMaster4HPC). EUMaster4HPC brings together major players in HPC education in Europe and mobilises them to unify existing programmes into a common European curriculum. It leverages experience from various European countries and HPC communities to generate European added value beyond the potential of any single university. "The consortium approach to build a new Master level study programme in HPC is based on the need of gathering the expertise and knowledge existing in a large number of universities across Europe in order to fulfill the existing gaps, bringing new, modern quality standard in HPC education; this complements with the expertise, advise and best practices from major players and stakeholders, such as supercomputing and research centres, the EuroHPC ecosystem, industry and SME as well as public administration” explains Prof. Pascal Bouvry, course director of the Master. A unique HPC profile Innovative curriculum and teaching paradigms, top HPC experts, access to supercomputing centres and strong industry support create a unique profile for MSc in HPC graduates. "We train the next generation of highly skilled and talented HPC experts to drive the European digital transformation, such as HPC administrators and architects, HPC proficient data scientists, HPC application developers and expert users”, comments Eleni Liakidou, project manager of the programme. The graduates will acquire a solid education in mathematical modelling and algorithms, software engineering, parallel programming and parallel architecture, high performance computing applications for science and engineering. They will have highly developed soft skills and their own network in the global HPC community. The Master in HPC will enable students to rapidly gain experience through internships in a partner company of the University of Luxembourg and will have access to the latest European cutting-edge HPC infrastructure. After graduation students will have an outstanding career perspective in international companies and research institutes. HPC is a flagship of the Luxembourg and European economy High Performance Computing (HPC) is a strategic resource for Europe and a key investment priority in the next long-term EU Multiannual Financial Framework (2021-2027). The European Commission has proposed substantial investments to consolidate Europe’s digital capacity and infrastructure and support the digital single market. However, to properly seize HPC’s opportunities, there is a strong need for increased education and training. HPC, data science, data analytics and the data economy are becoming increasingly important for many industry and commercial sectors. Advancing education and training in High Performance Computing (HPC) and its applicability to HPDA and AI is essential for strengthening the world-class European HPC ecosystem. It is of primary importance to ensure the digital transformation and the sustainability of high-priority economic sectors. "This new specialisation will have a great impact on the development of HPC based companies, R&D areas and the European economy as a whole. Recently, Luxembourg, in the context of the government’s strategy on AI and data economy already massively invested in the HPC domain, which will increase further. This is one of the main reasons why this study profile is so promising”, adds Prof. Pascal Bouvry.
