Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the core responsibilities of an effective supervisor.
2. Modify the "Action Basis" of their behaviour from "Doing to Directing."
3. Adapt the "Satisfaction Source" of their work from "Self to Staff."
4. Demonstrate the "Interaction Requirement" of their role from "Independent to Interdependent."
5. Conduct a transition process to formally step into the supervisory role (or enhance one’s supervisory role for those who have already been promoted).
6. Utilize their formal supervisory authority in ways that maximize staff engagement and empowerment.
7. Recognize when and why people resist supervisory direction and work through resistance in ways that maximize staff motivation.
8. Create a positive relationship with one’s boss to insure support for their supervisory action.
9. Adapt their supervisory capacities to work effectively with the diverse individuals.
10. Apply the knowledge and skills presented and discussed based on field tested "action ideas."

This course provides an in-depth description of how to be an effective supervisor and/or make the transition into the supervisory role. It clarifies the knowledge and skills how and why supervisors must transition from primarily being a “doer” of tasks to a “director” of others to perform tasks, and how their source of work satisfaction must change from “self” (accomplishing tasks as an individual or part of a team) to “staff” (enabling others to succeed as individuals or as a group).

The course includes an assessment of participant’s current level of supervisory skill. The program also addresses the unique dynamics that must be addressed when one is promoted from within a group compared to coming from outside a group. The program clarifies the nature of these realities and how supervisors can make the transition more smoothly and carry out the supervisor role more effectively.
