A Non-Profit Organization Elevating the Role of Patient Experts in Healthcare The Patient Expert Academy (PatEx Academy) is a non-profit organization committed to formalizing and strengthening the role of patient experts as essential stakeholders in the healthcare system. We uphold the belief that individuals with lived experience of illness or disability offer critical insights that should inform the development, implementation, and evaluation of healthcare policies and practices. Their perspectives are not only valuable—they are indispensable.

Prerequisites

A good level of English is required for effective participation.

Goals

Equip patient experts with foundational knowledge of medical concepts, health systems, and innovations in healthcare to foster a deeper understanding of their role within the system.

Contents

This Module provides participants with a solid grounding in medical concepts, healthcare structures, and the evolving role of patients within health systems. Through interactive lessons and practical exercises, participants gain an understanding of healthcare policies, patient rights, and innovations like telemedicine, while exploring how their lived experience can contribute meaningfully to system improvement.

Evaluation

Learners will:

  • Complete a knowledge assessment based on the material covered.
  • Participate in a role-play exercise to demonstrate their ability to apply what they’ve learned.
