Which European countries have the most digital skills?

New data from Eurostat shows that over half of the people in the European Union had at least basic digital skills in 2021. According to the data, the Netherlands, Finland, and Ireland scored highest while Romania, Bulgaria and Poland had the lowest scores. The World Economic Forum’s EDISON Alliance initiative aims to support 1 billion people globally get the digital skills they need, through digital inclusion.

The European Union has been measuring basic digital skills such as reading online news sites, sending instant messages, using word processing software or managing personal data access across the 27 Member States.

As reported by Eurostat, of all people aged between 16 and 74 in the EU in 2021, more than half (54%) have "at least basic overall digital skills." This means that they know how to do at least one of the activities related to each of these five areas: information and data literacy skills, communication and collaboration skills, digital content creation skills, safety skills and problem-solving skills.
