Prerequisites

This is an introductory course, and no technical background is required. However, a basic understanding of computing and internet usage is recommended.

Goals

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand what cybersecurity is and its relevance both personally and professionally.
  • Identify the most common types of cyber threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities.
  • Understand and apply cybersecurity practices to protect personal data and privacy.
  • Develop a basic understanding of key cybersecurity concepts, including computer networking, cryptography, and password management.
  • Understand the impact of social networks and social engineering in cybersecurity.
  • Understand the ethical and legal considerations in cybersecurity.
  • Understand the role of digital forensics in investigating cybersecurity incidents.
  • Develop basic skills in ethical hacking techniques and defense strategies.

Contents

This course is the first module in the EBU Cybersecurity Professional Certificate program, designed for both technical and non-technical audiences. The course introduces cybersecurity principles and practices, with a focus on protecting personal data, devices, and systems from current and emerging digital threats. Students will gain practical knowledge on identifying vulnerabilities, recognizing cyber threats, and understanding the trade-offs between cybersecurity and usability. Additionally, students will explore high- and low-level examples of threats, learn basic techniques of digital defense, and explore real-world scenarios inspired by current events in cybersecurity.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the basic components of computer networking.
  • Examine the concept of privacy and its legal protections.
  • Explain key concepts in cryptography and encryption.
  • Perform basic computer forensics tasks.
  • Develop a password management strategy.
  • Describe the social and ethical implications of cybersecurity.
  • Understand the risks and benefits of using social networks.
  • Conduct basic ethical hacking techniques (e.g., password cracking, Wi-Fi cracking).
  • Identify and understand ethical issues related to cybersecurity.

Teaching methods

The online delivery blends synchronous and asynchronous components. Students complete self-directed assignments hosted on the course platform. Weekly Forums support a required active, rubric-based student contributions that foster collaboration.

Evaluation

Exams may include essays, short answers, or MCQs. Formats include open/closed book. Time zones are considered. Assessments are formative and summative. Students have 2 weeks to review grades and must follow the appeal process in the Student Handbook.

Complete your online profile on the online campus. During this process, you will confirm your essential profile information to accept the offer.
Access the EBU scholarship online campus here https://connect.ebulux.lu/
Click the ‘Join EBU/Log In’ button on the homepage. You will need to create a new account.
During the Account creation process, you will be requested to indicate how you heard about the program and to select the partner organization on a drop-down list. If you found EBU by yourself, please simply write 'EBU' in these fields.
Please note as you create a new account, make sure to use a password you can easily remember.
After you create the account, open the link sent to your email for confirmation and then click continue.

STEP 2: COMPLETE THE COMMITMENT FEE PAYMENT
To enroll in the Autumn Term courses, go to the Certificate Enrolment page: https://connect.ebulux.lu/mod/page/view.php?id=48775
Select the course you would like to enroll in and click ‘Enroll Now’.
Select Payment Type and click proceed.
Enter the promotion code: EBULLL25 and click Apply code. Copy and paste the code to make sure it is correct. This will adjust the fee from €740 to €100.
Enter card details to complete the commitment fee payment. Once you complete your application and commitment fee payment, you will be enrolled in your selected course and ready to commence.
