Scent Detection Dog Handler – Basics and Specialization courses provide comprehensive know-how on practical work and the theory behind the training methods.
Scent work requires expertise in terms of dog handling as well as odor storage and handling and possible license ability.
1 - Structure of Education:The Detection Dog Handling course is divided into two sections; the basic part and the specialization part. Both courses end with the final exam.
During the Basics course, we use a training aid to build up a strong motivation for the dog while taking care of the accuracy and tactics in versatile scent work.
The Specialization course focuses on the training of the target odor chosen by the handler and the associated potential varieties, terrain work and reporting. To apply for the Specialization course, you need to have the Basics course completed.
The final exam must be carried out with 100% accuracy with the given instructions.

4 - Participation requirementsTo be able to follow the course schedule, you will need at least 5 hours of effective practical training time with your dog weekly, performing your homework on time, and participation in the course meetings and online training. For online training, you need a camera or a phone to video your exercises and post the videos to our online learning environment.
The dog participating in the course must be easy to motivate and able to work in the same space with other dogs. The dog should be physically in good health, and it must not be aggressive or unpredictable towards people.
Understanding the basic learning theory, rewarding-based training methods, and previous detection work experience are considered advantageous.
The primary course language is English. For French or German speaking attendees, translation help is offered if needed. (If you are unsure about your language skills, please ask for more details.)
Knowledge is validated throughout the training by practical exercises in real situations and analysis. A constant exchange between learners and trainer takes place continuously and allows continuous assessment.
A certificat will be issued at the end of the training if successful.
