Guidance and professional initiation classes  (COIP)

Helping young people to build a career plan

Guidance and professional initiation classes (Cours d’orientation et d’initiation professionnelles - COIP) enable young people to build a realistic career plan through meetings with managers who present their professions.

In addition to refresher courses on basic skills, training placements allow young people to validate their career plans and gain some first-time professional experience. The COIP programme lasts for 1 year.

01 Purpose

Young people who are under 18 on 1st September of the current year:

  • Who do not meet the conditions to access the secondary technical education (Enseignement secondaire technique - EST) vocational regime,
  • Who do not have the required skills to enter the job market, or
  • Who left school early,

Can attend guidance and professional initiation classes (Cours d’orientation et d’initiation professionnelles - COIP) in order to re-enter the education and training system.

COIP allows the young person to:

  • Prepare for working life,
  • Move towards the secondary technical education (Enseignement secondaire technique - EST) vocational regime,
  • Re-enter a lower level EST class.

02 Practical and general education

The COIP programme includes:

  • A practical and vocational component (workshop and training placements),
  • A general education component delivered in modules.

They are organised into the following vocational fields:

  • Agriculture, horticulture and the natural environment
  • Household help
  • Food and cookery
  • Construction
  • Wood
  • Hairdressing and personal treatments
  • Miscellaneous trades
  • Electrical
  • Clothing
  • Bicycle mechanics
  • Mechanics and automotive mechanics
  • Metal
  • Paint
  • Catering services
  • Rural tourism
  • Sales
