EPALE - Online Discussion - Basic Skills within Vocational Education and Training (VET)
EPALE - 16/11/2017
The European Basic Skills Network (EBSN) will hold a two-day online discussion focusing on basic skills within VET.
Learners on VET courses need to develop the specific language, literacy and maths skills required for the workplace. For adults this can be a barrier to success; it’s much easier to motivate someone to acquire a set of vocational skills, than to motivate them to improve the basic skills that underpin the acquisition of these skills. They are often reluctant to return to studying basic skills, which they may well associate with negative memories from school.
We would like to hear about your opinion on how best to address poor basic skills within VET. One way of providing VET learners with effective basic skills learning opportunities is to embed or integrate the basic skills teaching and learning into their vocational study. What other ways are there to address this issue and ensure that all adults have the support they need to succeed on their VET course.
Join us to discuss:
- Your experience of managing, teaching or designing VET with a focus on basic skills.
- How basic skills are addressed within VET in different countries.
- Different models for the integration or embedding of basic skills.
The discussion is open to everyone and will take place on 16 November (starting from 10.00 CET) and 17 November 2017. EBSN Secretary General, Graciela Sbertoli and the EBSN EPALE team, will moderate this discussion.
We would also be very interested to read short case studies of VET initiatives, which deal effectively with basic skills. Include links to documents and web resources that provide more information. These can be written in different languages.
A direct link to the discussion page will appear soon! Stay tuned!
We look forward to hearing from you.
