Erasmus+ boosts your language skills

European Commission - 06/10/2017

In August, Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support (OLS) hit the milestone of almost 1,000,000 users! Future updates promise bespoke access for Erasmus+ beneficiaries and brand new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) tailor-made to the needs of participants going abroad. Check out these updates and learn about the results of other Erasmus+ projects focused on enhancing language skills.

So how exactly can Erasmus+ participants maximise their progress in language learning during their stay abroad through the OLS?

OLS One big advantage is that they can learn the language anywhere, anytime. All that's needed is an internet connection in order to perfect your Polish in the park, or to brush up your Bulgarian on the bus. The handy link with the recently launched Erasmus+ Mobile App makes this easier than ever before.

An exciting development in recent months is that many participants will now have a choice in which language course they can follow on the OLS during their stay abroad, so long as they demonstrate high competence in the language of the mobility.

Participants will now also receive shorter, catchier emails to entice them into helping themselves to a tasty slice of video (MOOC) and live coaching courses.

Beyond OLS: language materials produced by Erasmus+ projects

OLS is only one of the language learning tools available thanks to Erasmus+. Many other valuable language-learning resources have been developed by projects funded by Erasmus+, including ICT language tools and guidance for trainers of foreign languages, all of which can be found in the Erasmus+ Project Results platform.

For instance, the successful project "Young Europeans Love Languages 2" (YELL2), created an online database of good practice examples regarding innovative and creative ways of language learning and teaching in non-formal and informal contexts. Project partners designed a handbook to assist teachers, trainers and relevant stakeholders in motivating young people to learn foreign languages.

Another project focused on language learning for migrants. The WelComm project worked across borders to improve the quality, attractiveness and accessibility of the language offer for migrants. It addressed the language challenges faced by migrant children upon school entry by producing an attractive multimedia learning kit for upgrading their language skills. The kit consists of a variety of language learning and teaching materials, using several forms of communication, from animated videos to games and comic books.

Meanwhile, OLS also continues to help newly arrived migrants across Europe, with some 6.000 refugees having now benefitted from the chance to learn a new language in order to facilitate their integration into European society.
