Secondary School Leaving Diploma (Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires - DFES)
Humanities and social sciences - modern section G

Adults who wish to complete their initial training or start studying again can obtain the Secondary School Leaving Diploma in humanities and social sciences - modern section G (English).

The diploma may be earned by attending evening classes, by following distance learning courses (eBac), or by attending day-time classes (E2C).

The modern section G is the only section of general secondary education that can be accessed through continuing training.

Students can attend evening classes to prepare for taking the examination for the secondary school leaving diploma in the modern G section. Classes corresponding to the 3e modern G to the 1re modern G classes are held at the Athénée de Luxembourg.

Applicants must:

  • be at least 18,
  • have successfully completed Year 10 (equivalent to the 4e class) of Luxembourg secondary education,
  • have the required proficiency in German, French and English.

Distance learning courses - eBac

Structure of classes Academic establishment
Year 11 to Year 13 (equivalent to 3e - 1re) classes

eBac courses only cover Year 11 to Year 13 (equivalent to 3e - 1re) classes, modern section G (English). 75% of eBac classes are delivered remotely by Internet, and 25% are delivered on-site at the secondary school.

Applicants must:

  • be at least 16,
  • have passed Year 10 (equivalent to the 4e class) of Luxembourg secondary education,
  • have the required proficiency in German, French and English.

Those who have not passed Year 10 (equivalent to 4e) can access the eBac option if they submit full details of their studies and work experience.
Applicants may commence eBac studies at the start of each new 'session', of which there are six each year.

Daytime classes - E2C

Structure of classes Academic establishment
Year 8 to Year 13 (equivalent to 5e - 1re) classes

The classes are held at the E2C and are available as continuous daytime education, with 32 to 36 lessons per week.

The E2C offers 5e and 4e modern classes as well as 3e o 1re modern G classes.

Jessica, 30, abandoned her studies in Year 11 (equivalent to 3e) as she was keen to find a job in order to gain her financial independence. After working in various fields at the beginning of her career, she has been employed by a clothing store for the past seven years, but would now like to become a secretary.

According to job vacancies, the minimum qualification required for this type of role is a Secondary School Leaving Diploma. In order to train and get her certificate, Jessica opts for the eBac option so that she can balance her family life, working life and study, given that 75% of the classes are delivered remotely by Internet and 25% on-site in the evenings.

Having looked at the eBac e-learning platform, Jessica is delighted to learn that she can take modules from Year 11 to Year 13 (equivalent to 3e - 1re) classes at her own pace.

Having looked at the eBac e-learning platform, Jessica is delighted to learn that she can take modules from Year 11 to Year 13 (equivalent to 3e - 1re) classes at her own pace. She therefore decides that she will devote all of her time to her studies in order to obtain the Secondary School Leaving Diploma as quickly as possible, and then register with the faculty of medicine.
